Saudi Arabia began two-day talks on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. Russia was not invited to the meeting in Jeddah, as a plan to end the war proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is being discussed there. Representatives of Ukraine, Western countries, as well as delegations of developing countries take part in the negotiations.

In total, the meeting will be attended by diplomats from about 40 countries, including the United States, China, India, Brazil, Indonesia, Egypt, Mexico, Chile and Zambia. Moscow considers unacceptable the conditions discussed by the participants in the meeting in Jeddah. It serves as a continuation of the negotiation process that began at the end of June in Copenhagen. Then, at a meeting in the capital of Denmark, representatives of Ukraine, the G7 countries and the countries of the “global South” discussed “further implementation of the Ukrainian peace formula” proposed by Zelensky.

This Formula, among other things, provides for the transfer of territories within the 1991 borders to Ukraine and the payment of reparations by Russia. In his evening address, Zelensky said that 42 countries of the world were represented at the meeting of advisers to the leaders of states. “Different countries, different political approaches to global affairs. But everyone is united by the priority of international law, and it is for this that Ukraine has proposed a formula for peace. Because the international order, violated by Russian aggression, had to be restored, ”Zelensky said at the same time.

On the eve of the meeting in Jeddah, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak wrote that he was waiting for difficult negotiations. According to the press, Ukraine is trying to convince developing countries of the need to support the Zelensky peace plan. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in turn, expressed the hope that the talks in Jeddah would lead to agreements on holding a summit at the level of world leaders, during which Ukraine's peace plan would be discussed.

China is present at the talks in Jeddah - the special representative of the Chinese government for Eurasian issues, Li Hui, arrived there. “We have many disagreements and we have different positions on many issues, but it is important that we have common principles,” Li Hui said before the talks. At the meeting in Copenhagen, there was no representative of the PRC.

Earlier, the American edition of the WSJ, citing Western diplomats, wrote that Saudi Arabia was chosen as the venue for the summit, as Western countries hoped for the presence of a Chinese representative. Beijing maintains close relations with both Russia and Saudi Arabia.
