Olaf Scholz recalled that during his last visit to Beijing, he and the Chinese leader issued a joint statement on the unacceptability of nuclear threats. “I would like to discuss with you what else we can do to achieve a just peace in Ukraine,” he said.

At the same time, the head of the German government called for closer cooperation between Berlin and Beijing in the field of climate protection. “Both of our countries have a responsibility to protect global public goods,” he stressed. Scholz recalled that the whole world is negatively affected by extreme weather events - storms, floods, droughts and cold weather. “Only together can we find solutions to stop climate change and manage the green energy transition fairly,” he said.

Scholz also advocated the development of bilateral economic relations based on World Trade Organization (WTO) norms. "Both China and Germany are trading countries that benefit greatly from the WTO. We are committed to strengthening global trade rules and further improving them together with other WTO members," he said.

In turn, Xi Jinping stated that China, despite differences, is relying on cooperation with Germany. “Together we can ensure more stability and security on Earth,” he is confident. At the same time, the Chinese leader pointed out the need to adhere to the principles of mutual respect and look for “common ground despite differences,” as well as learn from each other. In such conditions, bilateral relations will develop steadily and can have a “great impact not only on the entire Eurasian continent, but also on the entire world,” he added.

At the same time, he pointed to the beginning of a “new era of turbulence and upheaval,” during which risks for all humanity will increase. To solve the problems arising in this regard, cooperation between major powers is important, Xi emphasized.

The meeting between Scholz and Xi comes on the final day of the chancellor's three-day trip to China, accompanied by several ministers and a business delegation. An important topic of negotiations is also the situation in the Middle East after Iran's large-scale attack on Israel.
