Member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi today had a telephone conversation with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. The conversation took place at the initiative of the American side.
Yang Jiechi, who is also head of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, pointed out that the parties should properly implement the important consensus reached by Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joseph Biden on bilateral relations.
The two sides have recently held several dialogues in various fields, including inter-army relations, climate change, health and agriculture, Yang said. According to him, these dialogues are beneficial, and therefore their dynamics should be maintained.
At the same time, it should be noted that the United States periodically allows itself erroneous statements and actions that constitute interference in China's internal affairs and harm its interests, Yang said, adding that the Chinese side categorically opposes this and takes decisive countermeasures.
He noted that the words of the American side should not diverge from the deeds. He said the United States should translate its commitments into concrete policies and actions, cooperate with China, properly resolve existing differences, and take more constructive steps to return bilateral relations to the right path of healthy and sustainable development.
The Taiwan issue is the most important, sensitive and key issue in China-US relations, Yang said. The American side, he continued, has repeatedly made it clear that it adheres to the one-China policy and does not support "Taiwan independence."
However, recent US actions and statements regarding the Taiwan issue indicate otherwise, Yang said. If the US side continues to play the "Taiwan card" and continues to follow the wrong path, this will undoubtedly significantly aggravate the situation, he added.
China urges the United States to clarify the situation, strictly fulfill its obligations, and abide by the one-China principle and the three joint China-US communiqués, Yang said. He stressed that the Chinese side will take decisive action to protect its sovereignty and security interests, and the American side, he said, can be sure that China will keep its promise.
Yang Jiechi also noted that the pursuit of peace, cooperation and development is a common trend in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the common aspiration of the people. China develops friendly relations with neighboring countries based on the principles of friendship, sincerity, mutual benefit and inclusiveness, seeks mutual benefit and common win, and shares the same destiny with them, he said.
Any step that undermines the fundamental and long-term interests of the countries of the region for the sake of their own selfish interests will lead nowhere and will not succeed; any attempt to form their own bloc and provoke a split and confrontation is doomed to failure, Yang Jiechi stressed.
The parties also exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula, as well as some other international and regional issues.
