The High Court in London has set a number of conditions for the US government to extradite Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Three weeks are allotted to fulfill these conditions, and if Washington does not fulfill them, then Assange will be able to file an appeal against the extradition decision and it will be considered.

In practice, this means that Assange's extradition from the UK to the US will not take place in the next few weeks.

The court requires the US to provide the following assurances within three weeks: that Assange will be able to invoke the First Amendment of the US Constitution guaranteeing freedom of speech, that his Australian citizenship will not prejudice his interests in a trial in the US, and that if convicted he will not be sentenced to death.

If the court does not receive such assurances, Assange will be able to appeal. If the assurances are received, then this is not the end of the process: the parties will be able to file further motions before a final decision on the appeal is made, the decision published by the court said.

However, English judges rejected a number of grounds of appeal cited by Assange's lawyers, including that he was being persecuted for his political opinions.
If Assange ends up in the United States and is found guilty on all charges, he faces up to 175 years in prison.
