Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Trump Tower residence in New York on Friday, declaring it was time to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Republican presidential candidate has repeatedly criticized the Ukrainian leader on the campaign trail in the US, and a meeting between the two seemed unlikely just hours earlier.
As the two leaders stood side by side, Zelensky said he believed they had “a common understanding that the war has to stop and that Putin cannot win,” adding that he would discuss with Trump the details of his “winning plan.”
Despite their long-standing differences, Trump insisted he and Zelensky had a very good relationship. Zelensky invited Trump to visit Ukraine, to which Trump responded: “I will.”
Trump later said on his Truth Social account that if he is not elected president, “this war will never end and it will become WORLD WAR III.”
