The Electoral College elected Mikheil Kavelashvili as the President of Georgia in the first round. 224 MPs voted for him. The 53-year-old former Manchester City footballer, a member of the People's Power party, nominated by the ruling Georgian Dream party, was the only contender for the post of head of state in the elections that neither the opposition nor the current President Salome Zurabishvili recognized.

For the first time in Georgia, the president was elected not by the population, but by members of the Electoral College, which consists of 300 electors. The elections were held in the parliament building amid protests.

Salome Zurabishvili, the current president, does not recognize the legitimacy of the parliament and advocates holding new parliamentary elections. She said that she is not leaving because the country needs a legitimate institution and a government that was truly elected and reflects the will of the country and society.
