Early Sunday morning, December 8, Syrian rebels entered Damascus unopposed. Abu Mohammed al-Julani, the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, addressed a crowd gathered at the Umayyad Mosque in central Damascus and declared, “This victory is for all Syrians.”
The Assad family has lost control of Syria after more than 50 years of rule. Faced with a stunningly rapid rebel advance, President Bashar al-Assad and his family have fled to Moscow and been granted political asylum, a Russian official told CNN.
Assad’s fall has shattered the fragile balance of power in the region. Iran’s ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, warned in a television interview that there was a risk of war between “some Islamic and Arab countries and Turkey.”
