British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden agreed to form a first-of-its-kind economic partnership called the Atlantic Declaration following their meeting in Washington. This is not the full fledged free trade deal between the two countries that the Conservative Party promised in its election manifesto ahead of the 2019 general election. However, Biden and Sunak have agreed on an action plan for the new partnership, this plan, in particular, includes the following important points:
- Reducing the vulnerability of supply chains in the field of vital technologies
- Support for clean energy sources with a long-term goal of zero emissions, including a new partnership with civilian nuclear technology
- Creation of a new "Information Bridge" between the US and the UK to facilitate the exchange of data between 55 thousand British companies and certified US organizations "without too much bureaucracy"
- Hosting an International AI Safe Application Summit in the UK later this year to boost international efforts to manage and oversee emerging AI technologies
- Expanding cooperation to prevent "hostile countries" from developing and using technologies that could harm America or Britain
- Increasing research and collaboration to ensure US and UK leadership in key future technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G and 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors and bioengineering
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the UK should share the burden of spending in support of Ukraine with the United States and encourage other countries to follow suit. In the long term, it is about containment, Rishi Sunak stressed.
Joe Biden also plans to ask Congress to make it easier for British companies to use US government investment in the same way as companies in the US itself.
As Rishi Sunak noted, the declaration "sets new standards for economic cooperation, moving our economies into the future so that we can protect our people, create new jobs and grow our economies together." The UK and the US have always pushed the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to joint achievement, exchanging information not shared with anyone else, and building the world's strongest investment relationship, the British prime minister said. Therefore, it is quite natural, said Rishi Sunak, that the two countries intend to jointly build their economic future.
