Relations Between China and India May Affect World Order More Than Relations With the US

According to Dr. C. Bajpaee and Dr. Y. Jie

The relationship between China and India may be more important in the long term than the current rivalry between China and the United States. The two Asian countries are the world’s most populous countries (together they account for almost 40 percent of the world’s population) and the second-largest and soon third-largest economies, respectively. Both countries are competing for influence and leadership in the emerging multipolar world order.

Western countries, especially the United States, are serious about supporting India as a bulwark against a rising China, but they must also take into account India’s desire for strategic autonomy in its foreign policy, as well as the practical and economic considerations that come with India’s dependence on China.

Most of the world tends to view the relationship between China and India through the narrow prism of a long-standing and unresolved territorial dispute. But a major conflict between the two countries is unlikely, as is a long-term rapprochement. However, the territorial dispute is rather a symptom of a much broader geopolitical rivalry between two self-perceived “civilizational states.” As China and India become increasingly prominent geopolitical players, their rise introduces new layers of rivalry, from geoeconomic competition to differing positions on global issues.

There are several areas of convergence between the two countries, which are also often ignored by the West. Both countries retain similar worldviews, reflected in their positions on sovereignty, their tendency to see themselves as civilizational states and leaders of the Global South, and their desire for a more equitable distribution of power in global governance.

The fact that China and India are not currently working together to achieve a common goal is a geopolitical resource that could change the future of civilization one way or the other.
