German lawmakers voted 394-207 to dissolve the current government on Monday, with 116 abstentions. Europe’s largest economy will be in the hands of a caretaker government ahead of elections early next year.

The vote, now expected on February 23, will be only the fourth snap election in the 75 years since the modern state was founded. The moment reflects a new era of more fragmented and unstable politics in a country long known for strong coalitions built on long-term consensus.

The German government collapsed on Monday after the Bundestag passed a no-confidence vote in Chancellor Olaf Scholz, deepening a leadership crisis across Europe at a time of growing economic and security concerns.
