Moldova’s incumbent pro-Western MP Maia Sandu has won Sunday’s tense presidential election, defeating Alexandru Stoianoglo, a rival backed by the traditionally pro-Russian Socialist Party.
With 98% of the ballots counted, the Central Electoral Commission said Sandu led Stoianoglo with 54.35% of the vote in an election and campaign marred by repeated allegations of Russian interference, which it has repeatedly denied.
But Stoianoglo’s dominance in various regions of the country suggests that Sandu’s party faces a serious challenge in key parliamentary elections next summer that will determine the composition of the government.
