The Israel Defense Forces struck a southern Beirut suburb on Friday, killing Hezbollah operations chief Ibrahim Aqil in a “targeted” attack. On Saturday, the Lebanese radical group said another senior Hezbollah commander, Ahmed Wehbi, had also been killed.
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, at least 31 people, including three children, were killed in Friday’s attack, and dozens were wounded.
Ibrahim Aqil was Hezbollah’s military operations chief. He is known for his role in the 1983 attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Beirut (in which 63 people were killed) and the American and French barracks in Beirut (in which 307 people were killed).
Hezbollah has few options for launching a significant retaliatory strike without triggering a war with Israel. The group's backer, Iran, also sees no reason for a wider conflict. Hezbollah is part of Iran's deterrence system, and having a strong Hezbollah near Israel's borders is vital. Israel, however, points out that recent events are only the beginning of a new phase of the conflict.
