US presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump held their first and perhaps only 90-minute televised debate before the November vote, live on ABC News. The debate took place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, with two commercial breaks and no audience. While one participant spoke, the other's microphone was turned off. Here are some of the candidates' key statements.
When asked by an ABC host, "Do you believe Americans are better off than they were four years ago?" Harris said she planned to build an "economy of opportunity." Trump countered that Democrats had destroyed the economy in four years.
Harris: "... no matter the color of someone's skin or the language their grandmother speaks, we all have the same dreams and aspirations, and we want a president who invests in those who are not hateful and divisive."
Trump: “And the problem we have right now is that we have a nation in decline, and they have led us into decline. We have a nation that is dying.”
Harris: “If Donald Trump were president, Putin would be sitting in Kyiv right now and understanding what this means, because Putin’s agenda is not just about Ukraine.”
Trump: “If she ever gets elected, she will change everything. And that will be the end of our country. She is a Marxist, everyone knows she is a Marxist. Her father is a Marxist economics professor, and he taught her well.”
Harris: “World leaders are laughing at Donald Trump. I have spoken to military leaders, some of whom have worked with you, and they say you are a disgrace.”
Trump: “She hates Israel. If she is president, I believe that in two years Israel will cease to exist.”
