Google has unveiled Willow, its latest quantum chip. Willow delivers industry-leading performance across a number of metrics, achieving two important breakthroughs.
The first is that Willow can exponentially reduce errors as it scales with more qubits (the smallest unit of information in a quantum computer, analogous to a bit in a conventional computer). This solves a key problem in quantum error correction.
The second is that Willow performed a standard benchmark calculation in under five minutes, which would take the fastest computers today 10 septillion (that’s 10 followed by 25 zeroes) years — a number significantly longer than the age of the universe.
Wilow is a major step in a journey that began more than 10 years ago. As part of Google Research, Willow significantly advances the industry’s path to commercially meaningful uses of quantum computer technology.
The goal is to enter the realm of algorithms that are beyond the reach of classical computers and that are useful for solving real-world problems.
