The US State Department confirmed that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday. The US agency confirmed that the visit took place only after both Joe Biden administration officials left Ukraine.
This is the first visit by senior US officials to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion.
Ukraine was promised additional military assistance in the amount of $713 million.
"I want us to have heavy powerful weapons," Zelensky said before the meeting, adding that the situation with the supply of weapons has improved over the past week.
Biden will appoint a new US ambassador to Ukraine on Monday, Blinken said. The previous ambassador, Marie Yovanovitch, completed her work in Kyiv ahead of schedule, in 2019.
The new ambassador is expected to be Bridget Brink, the current US ambassador to Slovakia.
The US Secretary of State also promised that diplomats who left because of the war will gradually return to Kyiv this week.
After Kyiv, US Secretary of Defense Austin will head to Germany, where he will meet with representatives of 20 countries at the American base Ramstein to discuss military assistance to Ukraine.
