A new study at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) found that in order to avoid the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Kingdom must vaccinate two million people a week.
There are currently over 2.4 million coronavirus cases and 71,000 related deaths in the UK, according to the latest data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
“The strictest Tier 4 quarantine scenario across England, with schools closed during January and two million vaccinations a week, is the only scenario that will reduce the peak burden on the medical system below the levels seen during the first wave,” says research.
“In the absence of mass vaccinations, cases of illness, hospitalization and deaths in 2021 could be higher than in 2020.”
