The rebels' Joint Operations Center says its fighters have passed through two towns on the way to Homs, Rastan and Talbiseh, and are now about five kilometers from the city. On Thursday, anti-Assad coalition forces entered the city of Hama.
According to the UN, 370,000 people in Syria have fled their homes since the rebel offensive began. The organization fears that the flow of refugees could reach 1.5 million.
In the east of the country, Kurdish forces announced that they had entered the major city of Deir Ezzor. It is also reported that the Kurds have taken control of border crossings with Iraq.
The embassies of many countries, including Russia, China and Serbia, have recommended that their citizens leave Syria. The atmosphere is also tense in the capital Damascus, where residents are rushing to buy essential goods, some of which are already in short supply.
